Overview
The Pulse is the student-run newspaper at Syosset High School, a public high school on Long Island, New York's north shore. The paper is published once every three to six weeks, and is written, edited, and designed entirely by students. Recently, the paper has undergone something of a revival, with an entirely new look, and an entirely new attitude. Our office is located outside of C-Hall, at the corner of the corridor connecting C-Hall with A-Hall and the corridor connecting the Cafeteria with D-Hall.

History
The Pulse was founded in 1958 by Ronald Barry, recently retired assistant principal of the school. Back then, it was called The Scout. A few years later, the name was changed, and The Pulse as we know it, the heartbeat of Syosset High, was founded. In the mid-to-late 1980's, The Pulse was changed to a monthly news-magazine, however after a few years, it returned to the newspaper format. The Pulse web site was founded in December of 1999, along with a full-color edition of the paper to celebrate the millennium.

The Making
The creation of the paper begins with the writers. Each writer submits his/her articles, often on disk to facilitate layout. A template for the layout is then modified to apply to the current date. The layout is made using a Power Macintosh G3 computer with Adobe PageMaker 6.5. Images are scanned and placed, final edits are made, and the paper is sent to the printer, Arland Priting, in New Hyde Park. Within a week, the paper is printed. The next day, the Managing Editor and the Distribution Manager come early in the morning to distribute copies of the paper to every teacher in the school. The issue is then made into an Adobe PDF, and added to the archive of back issues. The PDF is then published to the web.
